Enlisted on November 18, 1942 at just 18 years old, where he served as an airplane and engine mechanic. He was so young that he had to have his mother sign for him to begin service. Once in the service, he joined the 367th Fighter Group, known as the “Dynamite Gang.” He was stationed in Florida, Niagara Falls, and finally in England where he worked on planes involved in the Invasion of Normandy. He retired from the military in 1945, earning a distinguished Unit Badge and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with one Silver Star and one Bronze Star.
