Mary Catherine Dean, 65, died on July 23, 2018. The cause was metastatic breast cancer.
Mary Catherine was born in Chattanooga on January 30, 1953, to the late John E. and Catherine Crimmins Dean. She was also predeceased by her brother, Joseph Patrick Dean. She was educated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School; Notre Dame High School; St. Mary’s College; and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, class of 1975, and a master’s degree from Loyola University New Orleans.
Mary Catherine married Robert L. Mahoney on October 17, 1981. He survives, along with the BFOE: their daughters, Catherine Brigid Mahoney Caldwell (Shae), Mary Patricia and Anna Rose Mahoney, their son, Timothy Dominic Mahoney; grandson, Orion Caldwell; sister, Sarah Dean Jones (Fort); sister-in-law, Kaki Mahoney Roberts (Dale), brothers-in-law, Pat (Becky), Ed (Suzanne), Chris (Dianna) Mahoney; 6 nephews, 5 nieces, 1 great-nephew and 1 great-niece, 4 cousins and their families, and so many wonderful friends.
She began her career in publishing at St. Martin’s Press in New York and retired as associate publisher/editor in chief from the United Methodist Publishing House in Nashville. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, politics, and was a Red Sox fan for more than 50 years.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 27 at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home, 201 25th Ave N, Nashville, with a wake from 4-7 pm and rosary to follow. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 28 at 12 (noon) at Holy Name Catholic Church, 521 Woodland St., East Nashville. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Bob, the news of Mary Catherine's death has shocked me. She gave so much of herself to others. It makes no sense that she should pass away at such a young age. I was never in her presence when she was not smiling. My prayers are with you and your family during this time mourning.
