

Mary was born on August 18, 1929 in Nashville, TN, the daughter of Wade and Irene Duncan Thornton. She married Felix Dewey George, II, and being marred to him for over 73 years, was one of her greatest joys. Felix survives.
Also surviving are her children, Tony (wife, Devonna) George, Cass (wife, Ann) George, Steven (wife, Marina) George, and Felecia (husband, Steve) Winchester; grandchildren, Geoffrey and Stephanie George, Danielle (husband, Mehran) Janbakhsh, Daniel George, Dalton Niravong, Austin (wife, Katie) Niravong and Jamie Niravong, Chris (wife, Danielle) George, Ashley George, and Adam, Andrew, and Brandon Vaden; sister-in-law, Laura George; great-grandchildren, Kiana, Jayden, Khloe and Kaia Janbakhsh, Lily George, Liam and Judson Niravong, Amelia, Ava, and Cooper George, Audrey Vaden, and Autumn Sweatt; and nieces, Elise and Tara Johnson.
Preceding Mary in death are her parents; daughters, Cheryl Gene and Sharon Vaden; son, Ronald George; and sister, Betty Sanford.
Mary was lovingly known to everyone as “Nanny.” She was the kindest and most selfless person her family and friends have ever known. She had a deep love for God, and she was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Nanny demonstrated this through her selfless service and devotion.
A native of Nashville, and a graduate of West High School where she was a member of the Drama Club and a member of the basketball team. Nanny was an avid lover of music, animals, and children. She was a member of Oak Hill Assembly of God and a lifelong member of Beta Sigma Phi.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from twelve o’clock until two o’clock on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will follow at two o’clock in Woodlawn’s Dignity Hall with Austin Niravong officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
