Mary Lucile Matlock

MATLOCK, Mary Lucile (Cile)89, passed away on March 30, 2012 at Woodcrest Nursing Home in Green Hills. Cile was born in 1923 in Little Lot, TN and raised in Mt. Pleasant, TN. Her father, Robert Short, was Superintendent of Water Works in Mt. Pleasant and her Mother, Clara, was a house-wife raising three sons and two daughters during the Depression era. She was married to Dyer Matlock of Winchester, TN for 66 years, until his passing in 2007. They lived in Winchester and Las Vegas before settling in Nashville's Hillsboro-West End Neighborhood in the early '50s. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and ESA, a philanthropic sorority contributing to causes such as St. Jude's Children's Hospital. For 30 years she served as Office Manager for Vanderbilt University Undergraduate Admissions. She considered her most important job was being a mother, she was very proud of her three children. She was an activist in her own way, writing and expressing her views in letters to organizations and leaders, in hopes of influencing and bettering society. She enjoyed re-decorating her home after her retirement as well as traveling with her daughter, Jeannie. She was active in her Tai Chai exercising at the Dayani Center and educated herself in healthy eating and fitness. For the last several years Cile suffered with a debilitating neurological disease. She never complained nor asked why. She accepted her illness being an inspiration in her strength to all who knew and loved her. Cile is survived by her brother, Gene Short of St. Louis, MO, daughters Kay Smith (Lynn) and Jeannie Rice (Bob) of Nashville, son Dyer Matlock (Tina) of Melbourne, FL, grandchildren and great-grand-children. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. and services at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 6 at Belmont United Methodist Church in Hillsboro Village. Arrangements are by MARSHALL DONNELLY COMBS Funeral Home.
