

She was born on April 21, 1921, in Bethpage, Tennessee, the daughter of the late James A. and Mattie Echols. Mary and her husband, William H. Murphy, were married in her home on October 23, 1943. They made their home in Nashville and were members of Woodmont Baptist Church for sixty-five years where Mary was active in The Golden Rule Sunday School Class. They spent sixty-three loving years together before his passing in April 2007. Traveling, crossword puzzles and card games with friends were a few of the things she enjoyed doing. Mary cherished life dearly as well as the people in it. She valued her faith and relationships with family and friends above anything else, as she was an extremely selfless person. She was loved by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by her brother, Bill Echols, and two infant sisters, Virginia and Ruby Nell.
She is survived by sons, Ted (Janet) and Wayne (Dorothy) Murphy; her grandchildren, Natalie, Julianne (Matt) and Will; sister-in-law, Gadell Hale; dear nieces and nephews, Marianne, Judy, Jim, Dave, Fred and Lisa; and several friends that she held near to her heart.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, October 30, 2015, from four o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home.
The Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, October 31, 2015, at eleven o’clock in the morning at Woodmont Baptist Church, 2100 Woodmont Boulevard, Nashville, Tennessee 37215, with an hour of visitation prior to the service. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
