Mary Susan was born on September 8, 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of James Meyer and Lucille (Risch) Meyer. Mary Susan is survived by her husband, Chuck, her two daughters Julie (Jeff Nienaber) and Alison, along with three grandchildren, Zoe, Charlotte, and Josh. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Jim. She also is survived by her sisters, Bonnie (Khaki Halpin), Sandy Hartung, and Vicki (Ed Schiebel), and brothers Tom (Delia) and David (Marilyn), along with Donna (Jim’s wife), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mary Susan went to Incarnate Word High School and Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas. After graduation, she taught high school History & Government. She raised a family in Arlington, Virginia, where she lived for nearly 30 years. Volunteer work at her children’s grade school led to the principal asking her to become the school secretary. After her children went to high school, she worked in other educational institutions part-time. She often said, “There would be fewer wars if everyone worked part-time.” She also was an ardent football fan and would say after the Superbowl that she had PFB (post football blues); she would count the days until the start of the Fall football season.
In 2006, Mary Susan and Chuck moved to Radford, Virginia where she volunteered at the Radford Clothing Bank and won a New River Valley Community Volunteer Award. In 2014, Mary Susan and Chuck moved to Nashville, where her daughter Alison and granddaughter Charlotte live. She volunteered at the Nashville Food Project and became an active member of Christ the King parish. One member of the parish book club said that Mary Susan was “both thoughtfully reserved and open with kind consideration.” Mary Susan viewed herself as “prim and proper” but to those who knew her, she was generous and genuine. To be in her presence was to know that you mattered. While her family will miss her dearly, they know that she has given them all the tools they need to thrive.
Funeral services will be held at Christ the King Church on Tuesday morning, May 30, 2023 with a visitation in the church from 10:00-11:00 and a funeral mass at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Nashville Food Project or Alive Hospice.
