Preceded in death by her parents Major Charles Alan Spain (USAF) and Geraldine Nokes Spain, and her brothers Scott Spain and Page Spain. Survived by her husband, Ernest Lee Edwards, III, her sister Miralee Spain, both of Nashville, her brother David (Myra) Foster of Jurupa Valley, California, brother-in-law William H. (Mindy) Edwards, Sr., her nephew William H. Edwards, Jr., all of Franklin, and her nieces Amy Edwards and Rachel Edwards of Nashville.
Melanie was the valedictorian of her high school class at Bellevue High School in 1969. She earned a bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University and a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. She taught special education in the Cheatham County school system for many years.
