OBITUARY

Mildred M. Foye

May 22, 1941March 22, 2020

1941-2020 Mildred (Millie) Foye, aged 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Houston, TX on March 22, 2020 surrounded by her loved ones.

Millie was born in Nashville, TN on May 22, 1941 to Joseph Finley McIlwaine and Mildred Buckner McIlwaine. She grew up in Nashville and attended St. Bernard Academy from age 4 through high school, graduating as Valedictorian. Friendships she made at St. Bernard's were lifelong, and Millie enjoyed the many reunions spent with her dear friends in Nashville.

Millie attended Ladycliff College for two years before marrying Robert (Bob) Foye (class of 1960 West Point) at the Nashville Cathedral of the Incarnation on July 30, 1960. She and Bob had met in New York City in 1959 at a West Point party. Millie and her roommate met Bob and his roommate that same night, setting the stage for two long, happy marriages. Millie and Bob returned to NYC almost every year for vacations.

With several young children at home, Millie completed her college education as one of the earliest women graduates of Texas A&M University, earning a B.A. in 1967. She was a lifelong learner, earning master's degrees from both A&M (1973) and the University of Saint Thomas (2005). She was an avid reader, and a formidable foe during a game of Trivial Pursuit or Scrabble.

Professionally, Millie worked for Orange County New York Child Protective Services for several years. She was also a professor at both Texas A&M University and Blinn College in College Station, TX for many years, specializing in British Literature and freshman composition. After Bob's retirement from the military, the family moved to Houston, TX, where Millie worked as a volunteer helping HIV/AIDS patients in the 1980s and 1990s. In this capacity she brought many patients back to the Catholic Church as well as inspiring new converts.

The most important job of her lifetime was being a wife to her husband, mother to her five children and a grandmother ("Mimi") to fourteen. She had a strong devotion to her Catholic Faith and was a loyal friend to many clergy and religious. She was generous to friend and stranger alike, and loved introducing people to each other over shared meals and conversation. She brought together former students, classmates, professors, priests, nuns, and neighbors, making them all feel like part of her family.

Millie was preceded in death by her parents, her older sister Mary Finley Carver and husband Ted Carver, and her grandson Robert Lawrence Foye. Millie is survived by her loving husband of 60 years Bob, and their five children: Jim (Alma), Carrie Hooper (Rich), Rob (Kristi), Patrick (Ana) and Michael, as well as by thirteen grandchildren: Cathy, Andrew, Susan, Lizzie, Alex, Sam, Sarah, Ginger, William, Meredith, Annabel, Max and Sophia.

Dear Jim, Alma and the Foye Family,

We wanted to send our deepest sympathies from the Koch family for the loss of your dear Millie. She was a lovely and endearing woman and we were fortunate to have known her when we were neighbors to Jim and Alma so many years ago. I saw the obituary in the Chronicle and just wanted to send some love and reach out with this virtual hug!

Fondly,
Tom, Brenda, Chelsea and Emily.
