

Nancy Gene Headden Young, age 87, went to be with Jesus on February 17, 2025, in Nashville, Tennessee. She was born on April 21, 1937, in Milan, Tennessee, to Ruth Dunegan and Harmon Clay Headden. Nancy and her sister, Ruth, lost their mom at a young age and a new family was formed when their dad married Dorothy, "Dot" Bragg. Nancy graduated from Hillsboro High School where she excelled in basketball earning the honors of All NIL and All Regional. She graduated from the University of Tennessee where she was elected to be a UT cheerleader. During her college years she worked as Playground Director at several Metro Parks back in the day when there was a special Playground Circus where children of all economic backgrounds could participate, perform and compete in musical skits; Nancy made all the costumes, produced the skits, taught the music and choreography to scores of children including her siblings, Cheri, Henry and Ginger.
She was married to Martin Carroll Young and began her teaching and coaching career at Overton High School raising her two sons, David and Steve and her daughter, Sharon. Nancy, being so soft spoken and sweet became a first grade teacher for most of her teaching career at Norman Binkley, Franklin Road Academy and Oak Hill and is still remembered as an extremely caring and loving teacher. She had a love for choral music and taught middle school choruses as well as directing her church choir at Southminster Presbyterian Church for over fifty years. When she was in her sixties, she joined Sweet Adelines barbershop chorus with its four-part harmonies and competed in their annual Southeastern Regional contests. Nancy was also an excellent tennis player in her younger years becoming an All-State tennis player and continuing to compete in tournaments during her middle age years. In her later years, she excelled at golf winning the Championship at her country club. Along with her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Adams and her husband, Carroll. She is survived by her sons, David Carroll Young (Debbie), Steven Headden Young and her daughter, Sharon Lynn Young, eight grandchildren, Kristin, Lexi, Ashley, Stephanie, Dustin, Briana, Brandon, Alecia, and two great grandchildren; her siblings, Cheri Headden Henderson Snyder (Lewis), Henry Harmon Headden (Betsy), Ginger Headden Mize (Alan). She also leaves behind many loved nieces, great nieces and nephews and great nephews.
A gathering of family & friends for Nancy will be held Friday, February 21, 2025 from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Ln, Nashville, TN 37204, followed by a celebration of life from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
