Richard Edward Carter Jr.

Richard Edward Carter, Jr passed away at the age of 75 in his home Tuesday July 11, 2018. His friends and family knew him as Dicky. He attended Donelson High School and was a character to all who had a chance to get to know him. Family and friends knew him as a generous man with a sense of humor like no other. Dicky served and was honorably discharged from the United States Army, serving his country as an infantryman. While stationed in Germany he served as Military Police during the Vietnam era. During his service with the Army he qualified as a sharpshooter and obtained 3 ribbons for good conduct. After serving in the military, Dicky married Marilyn Jean Colgate and went to work at the family’s hardware store. Upon retirement, Dicky had made it to Vice-President of Carter Hardware. An intuitive business man, Dicky is responsible for opening the first video store for movies and games in Nashville, TN. A member of the American Legion as well as a loyal NRA member, he certainly enjoyed collecting, shooting or just talking about guns with a special interest in antique and unique firearms.
Richard Edward Carter, Jr is preceded in death by his father, Richard Edward Carter Sr, his Mother Catherine Louise (Jones) Carter, brother-in-law Salvador Palazzolo, brother-in-law Ronald Richardson and his nephew Steven Paul Howell. It goes without saying, anyone who knew him would understand the mentioning of his beloved dog Montague Tyrone, also known as “Gooter” who also preceded Dicky in death.
Richard Edward Carter, Jr is survived by two children Katherine Leah Carter (Hedge) and Richard “Ricky” Edward Carter III. Five grandchildren: Timothy Carter “T.C” Hedge, Thomas Jordan Jones Hedge, Mary Catherine Anne Costa (Braedon), Richard “Rick” Edward Carter IV and Nicholas “Nick” Grant Carter. Dicky is survived by 5 sisters: Barbara Richardson, LeeAnne Wall (Patrick), Lanus “Locky” Palazzolo, Jeanne Carter (Howell) and Harriet Hines (Mark). He also is survived by his one brother James L. Carter. Nieces and nephews: Tommy Richardson (Rhonda), Sandie Holt (Jackie), Christy Richardson, Michael Richardson (Shannon), Tom Wall, Richard Wall, Laura Bomar, Diana Woodard (James), Jennifer Casner (Jason), Catherine Hines, Gracie Hines. Dicky also had some very close friends who always made time to check in on him. The family would like to extend immense gratitude to Dianne and Kenny Webb, Bill Hardin, Bill Smith, Lois Smith, Al Maynard, Treva Goodwin, Anita Swift, David Graves, and Connie Harrison.
Special recognition goes to Dicky's grandson, Nick, who moved in with his grandfather to care for him.
