Dr. Richard P. Ownbey
February 14, 1931 – September 11, 2020
Dr. Richard P. Ownbey died peacefully in his sleep, at home, on 9/11/2020. He was born in Athens, Tennessee, on February 14, 1931. He grew up in Etowah, Tennessee, before attending University of Tennessee undergraduate and medical schools. He met his beloved wife, Juanita Miles, in Knoxville, Tennessee. She preceded him in death, as did his mother, Geneva Stiles Ownbey, and father, Lester Frank Ownbey.
He and Juanita were married for fifty-five years and lived in Memphis, Tennessee, during medical school. He entered the Navy as a flight surgeon and was stationed in Pensacola, Bermuda, and Boston, where his first son, Rick, was born. He completed his radiology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. His second son, Phil, was born in Athens, Tennessee, after that fellowship was completed.
Dick and Juanita settled in Nashville, which Dick expressed as suiting his desire to be equidistant between Juanita’s family in West Tennessee and his family in East Tennessee.
While often the quietest person in the room, Dick was always a felt presence. He was dedicated to his career as a radiologist and became a Fellow in the American College of Radiology. He worked, primarily, at the original Baptist Hospital in Nashville. He and Juanita loved to entertain and travelled widely in the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. He was active in the Belle Meade Methodist Church and the Cheekwood Cultural Center.
He is survived by his sons, Richard (Catherine) and Phil (Jean), and three grandchildren, Meghan (Brandon), Ian (Sara), and Danielle (Josh). There will be a private burial service at Mount Olivet Cemetery where Dick will be interred next to his wife, Juanita. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Belle Meade Methodist Church.
