

Following graduation from high school, he graduated from Mississippi College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY.
While in Kentucky, he met and married the love of his life, wife Joy.
He served as pastor of Baptist churches in Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Nashville, Tennessee where he was pastor of Glendale Baptist Church from 1970-1988.
Following pastorates, Richard joined Belmont University where he served in several roles including as Special Assistant to the University President, and as Director of the Center for Quality and Professional Development.
He taught locally, throughout the United States, and internationally.
After 15 years at Belmont University, he retired and enjoyed golf, travel, and spending time with friends and family.
Richard was the father of son Scott, daughter Suzanne, father in law of Wim, and the proud grandfather of Erik, Lara, and Sienna.
He was predeceased by his parents, Brooks and Gladys Smith, brother Andy, and sister Libby.
