Doctor Ikard was wonderful during my husband's surgery.  We both felt my husband was in such good hands and Dr. Ikard was so kind to us.  Our sincere condolences to Dr. ikard's family and friends.

I was so sorry to hear of Dr. Ikard's passing. This  caring and principled man is greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.  Over the years, we had corresponded about his outstanding work as an historian of the Columbia, Tennessee area. . On many occasions, he went out of his way to support my work as a writer; he championed my play The Bridge Party and was convinced that it should be produced in Middle Tennessee. Whenever my Aunt Camille Howell mentioned Dr. Ikard's mother and their teaching together in the Columbia schools, she beamed with delight.. The photo of Dr. Ikard with pen in hand is so appropriate--Medical Doctor, Author, Social Conscience for his Community. A True Renaissance Man.

So enjoyed working with Dr. I at the VA.  Very warm and approachable placing his big hand on my shoulder in his greetings. I am missing him!

I enjoyed working with Dr. Ikard at the VA Hospital for the last 7 years.  He was always kind, funny and thoughtful. I miss him already and I am sorry for your loss.   My prayers are with the family during this time of healing.

I will miss Bob! He was a good friend, fraternity brother, and one who I listened to. He was always one who could render sage advice on almost anything. I saw him a couple of weeks ago, but didn't get to say anything to him; I wish I could turn back the  clock, and make that special effort to visit with him, but we all know we can't turn back the clock-hands of time. Go well my friend.

Bobby did a great service for African American history by
written his incredible book.  He assured that the horrible
history of  racism is not forgotten in Maury County.

I had the honor and pleasure of working with Dr. Ikard for just a couple of years and I'm very glad to have known him.  He was a warm, funny, and kind man.  I will always remember the picture of his beautiful family that was on his computer in the office.  He was a man who clearly enjoyed life, teaching, and loved his family very much.  My deepest condolences to the Ikard family.

Though it was long ago that we worked many hours in the OR I have thought of you often and with great fondness and respect. I am glad we were friends.

Robert Ikard was my colleague, friend, Vandy and sports fan, and partner for the last decade at the Nashville VAMC.  He kept us all honest.  He was an intelligentsia for sure, one of the most literate surgeons I have known.  He was a philanthropist, notably the various musical and artistic offerings at Belmont.  He was a writer, both of books such as For the Love of the Game and of letters of recommendation for medical students seeking residencies.  Kitty was ever supportive through tough times and the good times.  I could write pages but won't.  I envy that he lived until he died, no hemodialysis, no tracheostomy, no PEG, no SNIFF.  I will take that!
I love that his memorial service at his beloved Westminster Presbyterian Church was on Veterans Day.  He was a great asset to our residents, students, and veterans as well as partners like me.  We thank God for a great life lived well.  Love you man.  tarp

Loved working with Dr. Ikard. He was the kindest smartest man who spoke so highly of his family and Vandy athletics. 
He used to sneak my lunch when I was warming it in the microwave. 
The VA won't be the same without him.
