Nashville – Robert Eugene McNeilly III, known to all as Rob, passed away on January 21, 2025, at the age of 68, surrounded by his family. Rob led a full, vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and community service.
Rob is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Caroline Tate McNeilly, as well as their three children: Margaret Thompson (John), Tate McNeilly (Carolyn), and Robert McNeilly (Emily). He is also survived by seven cherished grandchildren: Jack, Neilly, Frances, and Mary Caroline Thompson; George and Wallace McNeilly; and Addie McNeilly. He leaves behind his two sisters, Caroline McNeilly Bartholomew (David) and Eleanor McNeilly Arnold (Scott), and is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Katherine (Pat) Gordon McNeilly and Robert Eugene McNeilly Jr.
Shortly after birth in Stuttgart, Germany, where his father was based in the U.S. Army, Rob grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated from The Webb School in Bell Buckle, TN, earned his undergraduate degree from Tulane University, and furthered his education at the Stonier School of Banking.
Rob enjoyed a distinguished 45-year career in the banking industry, most notably with Third National Bank/SunTrust in Florence, AL and Nashville, TN. He retired twice, first returning to work with Synovus Bank, and later with Bank of Tennessee. A dedicated civic leader, Rob served on numerous boards, including The United Way of Greater Nashville, Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Public Education Foundation, Leadership Nashville, and the Music City Bowl, among many others.
A devout Christian, Rob was deeply involved in the church, serving on the Vestries of Trinity Episcopal Church in Florence and St. George’s Episcopal Church in Nashville. He was an active participant in the Cursillo Movement within the Diocese of Alabama, where his faith was a guiding force in all his endeavors.
Rob’s warmth, humor, and generosity touched many lives. A gifted storyteller, he had an infectious love for a good joke and was always ready with a thoughtful gift or shared article for friends and family. An avid golfer, Rob especially treasured his time at the lake in Florence, AL, and the beach in Longboat Key, FL. He was a lover of music and dancing; and his sharp wit, kindness, and respect for others made him a beloved friend to many. His personal connections ran deep, and he was never happier than when he was with his family—his wife, children, and grandchildren were the pride of his life.
The world has lost a remarkable man, one whose authenticity and thoughtfulness will be deeply missed. Visitation will be held at St. George’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, January 28th, at 2:00pm. The service will follow at 3:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George’s Church or a charity of your choice.
Rob's memory will live on in the countless lives he touched, and his spirit will remain a source of inspiration for those who knew and loved him.
