Robert K. Wibking
March 17, 1926 – July 14, 2018
Robert Kenton Wibking passed away at the age of 92 on Saturday, July 14, 2018. He was born in Moweaqua, Illinois, on Wednesday, March 17, 1926, the only child of Gladys Jackson Wibking and Henry George Wibking. Ken, as he was known to friends and family, saw active duty with the Navy in World War II before coming home to earn a degree in Geography from the University of Kentucky on the GI Bill. He went on to earn his PhD in Geography at the University of Nebraska.
He and his wife Ruth moved their growing family to Clarksville, TN, in 1962 where Dr. Wibking would teach Geography for 30 years at Austin Peay State University, much of that time as head of the department. He was a great believer in public education and in particular his own geography students. He was an enthusiastic supporter of all public lands in the USA and an accomplished cartographer. For fifty years, his favorite vacations involved adventures to numerous state and national parks with his wife and five children.
Dr. Wibking was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Holladay Wibking. He is survived by his second wife, Beverly Wright Wibking; his 5 children; Debbie (Dr. Nick) Petrochko, Dr. Ron (Cathy) Wibking, Angie (Virgil) Fox, Tim (Dr. Janet Dittus) Wibking, and Bess (Randy) Mitchell; survived by nine grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 19, 2018 from 4:00 until 7:00 at Northside Church of Christ 1375 Old Hickory Blvd. Nashville, TN 37207 and at Port Royal Methodist Church, 2747 Highway 76 Adams, TN, and on Friday, July 20, 2018, at 11:00 with a Celebration of Life at 12:00 with Rev . John Casey and Bro. Phil Kinzer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In memory of Dr. Wibking, the family requests donations in lieu of flowers be made to the APSU Foundation, P.O. Box 4417, Clarksville, TN 37044.
