Russell Verdene Turpin Jr.
September 4, 1943 – March 6, 2019
TURPIN, Russell “Russ” V. Jr., age, 75 of Tullahoma, TN. passed away peacefully in the early morning hours Tuesday, March 6th, 2019. He was born in War, West Virginia on Saturday, September 4th, 1943. He was preceded in death by his father Russell V. Turpin Sr.; mother Ethel Repass and step-father Sid Repass
He graduated from Randolph Macon Military Academy and attended Marshall University as well as Penn State, where he studied Civil Engineering. The early years of Russ’ career were spent constructing numerous bridges and dams to include the large dam project in the Seven Mountains of Pennsylvania. Later in life, Russ used his engineering skills to realize his passion for designing and developing golf courses. Among Russ’ other passions are rock n’ roll music, enjoying a beautiful beach in summer, and coaching softball. Throughout his adult life Russ spent many hours on the softball diamond coaching and mentoring “his girls”. His love for the game and in turn, his players, left indelible marks on their respective lives as well as his children’s whom he either coached or who have gone on to continue his passion of coaching.
The last several years of his life were spent at the side of his beloved fiancée, Sue Austin, by whom he is survived. He is also survived by daughter, Angela Kay Drake and her husband Joe L. Drake Jr.; 2 grandsons, Joseph Lamar Drake lll and Crieghton Pope Davis and great granddaughter, Scarlet Grace Drake; son Russell V. Turpin lll and his wife Danielle Turpin; 2 granddaughters, Tara Brooke Turpin and Courtney Nicole Turpin; son Shawn Michael Turpin and wife Katy Valentine Turpin; grandson James Patrick Turpin and granddaughter Alexandra Valentine Turpin; daughter Stacy L. Varner and wife Danielle Patterson Varner; mother of his children Carole Ann Turpin and numerous other family and friends.
Graveside service will be held Saturday, March 16th at Mount Olivet Cemetery (1101 Lebanon Pike, Nashville, TN 37210) at 1PM CST.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The American Heart Association on behalf of Russell V. Turpin Jr. Any flowers sent, should be directed to Mount Olivet Cemetery.
