

Ruth "Polly" Saunders Harms died peacefully on January 25, 2017, in Davidson, NC, surrounded by her three sons. Polly was born on June 24, 1921, in Tulsa, OK to Allie May Caldwell Saunders and Lewis Earl Saunders. She lived the early part of her life in Nashville, TN, graduating from East Nashville High School in 1938. In November 1943 she enlisted in the Women's Marine Corps and advanced to Sergeant before her honorable discharge in October 1945. In June 1945, Polly married John Daniel Harms II and they raised three honorable sons, John Daniel III (The Villages, FL) married to Karen Langefeld Harms; Stephen Douglas (Montclair, NJ) married to Patricia Devine-Harms; and Peter Lewis (Atlanta, GA). She was predeceased by her husband, parents, and brother Phillip Ray Saunders. She is survived by her three sons, brother George Russell Saunders, four Grandchildren (Sandra of Chicago, IL; John Daniel IV of Batavia, IL; Mark of Grayslake, IL; and Daniel of Atlanta, GA), and five Great-Grandchildren. Polly came from a long line of strong women. She lived life with style, devotion to country and love for family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, on Tuesday, February 14 in the Mt Olivet Chapel at 1101 Lebanon Pike, Nashville, followed by a graveside burial. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Heifer International (www.Heifer.org) or Women's Memorial (www.womensmemorial.org), a memorial in honor of women who have served our country in the Military.
