Sandra Ann Schatten of Nashville, TN passed away on December 21, 2017 after a short illness. Sandra was born in Nashville on November 17, 1954 and was the daughter of Joan Stanley Schatten and Emanuel Schatten. She graduated from Peabody Demonstration School and attended the University of Miami and Vanderbilt University. Sandra had a seventeen year career teaching special education in public schools in the Miami, Florida area and Nashville. She was passionate about her students; everyone deserved a chance in Sandra’s view, and she had a unique gift for being able to reach children with even the toughest of challenges.
After retiring from teaching, Sandra devoted herself to philanthropy. She created a foundation to support literary, educational, charitable, religious and scientific purposes in Nashville, which she did with intelligence and enthusiasm. Many organizations in Nashville benefitted from her support.
Sandra loved her family, and was proud of the legacy left by her father Emanuel, a noted developer. She was a devoted and generous friend to many. She was colorful and fearless, but had a heart of gold and derived her greatest joy from helping people in need. Sandra inherited her father’s business sense, but was always a soft touch for a friend--be it of the human or four-legged variety--who needed a hand.
Sandra was predeceased by her father Emanuel. She is survived by her mother, Joan Stanley Schatten, sisters Leslie Stillman (Barry) and Maxine Star Schatten, and nieces and nephews Megan Stillman, Kevin Stillman, Jared Stillman and Stephanie Cook.
The family would like to thank the team at St. Thomas Hospital West and Sandra’s assistants Marvin Cody and Nelly Escamilla for their care and compassion.
A visitation will take place at the Marshall Donnelly Combs Funeral Home at 201 25th Ave. North, Nashville 37203 at 9.30 to 10.30 am on the morning of Wednesday, December 27. A graveside service and burial will immediately follow at 11 am on Wednesday, December 27 at the West End Synagogue Cemetery at 2136 18th Ave. North , Nashville 37208. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Emanuel Schatten Scholarship Fund of the University School of Nashville, 2000 Edgehill Avenue, Nashville, TN 37212, or to a charity of your choice.
Barry Stillman, Kevin Stillman, Jared Stillman, Neil Krugman, Tony Syler, and Marvin Cody will serve as pallbearers. Trustees of the Emanuel Schatten Trust will serve as honorary pallbearers.
