Seth F Carmody, Jr. (known in his youth by “Jack” since his older brother objected to two people with the same name in one house) was born July 9, 1941 in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. He died at home in Nashville, Tennessee on July 20, 2018, surrounded by his family.
His parents were Leonora and Seth Frederick Carmody. He had 3 siblings who preceded him in death: Phyllis, Vonn, and Jim. He attended Arcadia High School and was on the undefeated, unscored-on, championship football team of 1956-1957, now enshrined in the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame. He was a multisport athlete in high school, but most importantly met his future wife, Patricia Blalock, there. He attended Teacher’s college of Kearney, now named University of Nebraska-Kearney.
He married his high-school sweetheart “Patsy” in July of 1964. Initially, he taught ‘the new math’ at high school, but with the advent of calculating machines, he changed his focus to computers. He worked at Southeast Missouri State University in the computer lab. While he enjoyed his work in the computer lab following the progress from a room-sized computer to the micro, he decided to teach. He earned his Doctorate in Education and started teaching at SEMO. He then taught at Illinois State University before moving to Nashville and teaching at Lipscomb University for the remainder of his career.
In addition to his full-time teaching, he also ran his own business helping local companies enter the computer age. He worked hard to provide for his family. Despite his many obligations, he remained committed to his family. He was always involved in his children’s lives, especially sports and emphasizing academic excellence. He loved family vacations at the beach, playing ping-pong and cards.
He put his faith and hope in Jesus Christ and was an active member of the local Churches of Christ. He served as a deacon, teacher, and song leader. He enjoyed working at VBS and church camp. He and his wife have been long-term members of Brentwood Hills Church of Christ in Nashville.
He was also an active volunteer in the community. He worked with Healing Hands International and drove the van for Room in the Inn. He helped with FriendSpeak and frequently visited the sick in the hospital. He was compassionate, kind, and generous. He is remembered fondly by his students, family, and numerous friends in the community.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; his children: Anne (Mike), Mike (Bonnie), Dan (Robyn)
his grandchildren: Seth, Sandy, Jonathan, Katherine, Lauren, Madeline, Lexi, Maggie, Jack, Collin, Andy and Bo and his great-grandchildren: Jaci, Jaxon, Melody, Seth and Leo
