Stan Fossick was born June 30, 1936 to Dorothy Beesley Fossick and Joseph Lancelot Fossick. With family beside him, he peacefully passed away Friday, February 28, 2025. Except for his four years in the Army, Stan lived his entire life in Nashville, attending Eakin Elementary, Hillsboro High, and Vanderbilt. He had a great love for and commitment to his hometown.
Stan had a long career in the wire business, joining his high school friend, John T. “Killer” Johnson at Mid-South Wire Company in 1969. His career spanned over 50 years, retiring at the age of 80 as Executive Vice President. During his tenure he was the recipient of the Max Moore Entrepreneurial Spirit Award, the highest award given by the American Wire Producers Association. Throughout his working life, he developed many relationships, in the U.S. and abroad. Stan firmly believed and lived that your word is your bond, both in business and in friendships.
In addition to his career at Mid-South, he served as foreman of the Davidson County Grand Jury 42 times, spanning a 30-year period, at the request of six different criminal court judges. Stan frequently received personal messages from past jurors thanking him for his guidance and patience in helping them realize the importance of serving on the Grand Jury.
Growing up playing in Metro Parks his payback was to serve on the Metro Board of Parks for more than 30 years. Appointed to five-year terms by at least four mayors, as evidenced by his name on multiple plaques throughout the city. Tommy Lynch, former director of Metro Parks, stated “Stan wasn’t just the longest-serving board member, he consistently provided excellent mentorship and leadership as a member and Chair".
Often referred to as “Stan the Man,” he was an avid sports fan, playing and coaching softball in younger years, competitively playing racquetball in his middle years, and loving all sports until the end of his life. He especially loved football, which he was still “playing” into his 80s – from the couch.
He was a generous, loving man who was “there” in a multitude of ways, helping many people achieve their personal or professional goals, or simply helping someone feed their family. He was a tireless contributor to the community, bringing love, laughter, and loyalty to his very large family of friends. In short, he was a treasure – his memory still is.
Married to Carol for 42 years, they experienced an abundance of fun, adventure, wonderful friendships, and simply being together steeped in love and sheer joy. They were truly the loves of each other’s lives.
Stan is predeceased by parents; beloved brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Sandra Parker Fossick; and grandson Joe. He is survived by his wife, Carol Etherington Fossick; daughter, Anne Denise “Sissi”; son Jay; grandsons, Ben, Jake (Ariana), and Noah; nephews, Matthew Parker, Tommy (Ashley), Lance (Shellie), two great nieces and nephew; and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by John T. Johnson, Jr., who considered Stan his second father, mentor, and beloved friend.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, April 5, 1:00pm, at Woodmont Christian Church. Visitation will be at 12:00pm until the time of service, with reception following.
Please remember Stan by doing or being something that will enrich the community – and all who live within.
