

Born on July 27, 1935, Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin H. and Flavel V. McHugh, his brothers, Edwin H. McHugh, Jr., William T. McHugh, and his stepbrother John G. Shumaker. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Betty Bouchard McHugh and his family, Stephen H. McHugh, Jr. of Alpharetta, GA, and Thomas E. McHugh (Jennifer) of Nashville, TN. He was blessed with five grandchildren and four great grandchildren who he loved dearly, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Steve attended Eakin Elementary and West End High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Peabody College/Vanderbilt University in 1958, where he met the love of his life, Betty. Steve was active in professional and community organizations and was committed to his faith and his church.
He enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, HCA, and other healthcare insurance organizations. His career included working in the healthcare, insurance, finance and economic fields as well as teaching CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter), CFC (Chartered Financial Consultant), and FLMI (Fellow/Life Management Institute) courses.
Steve was generous with his time and talents. He served on the boards of Faith Family Medical Clinic, Tennessee Association of Health Underwriters, Middle Tennessee Healthcare Executives Association, Bravo Creative Arts Center, and was a founding board member and the first volunteer for the Nashville Tools for Schools organization.
He was an active member of Woodmont Christian Church for over 60+ years, serving in a host of roles including as an Elder and a member of the Board. He was involved in a number of activities, including the choir and the annual Walk Through Bethlehem program. He was also an assistant Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 92 and was a recipient of the Order of the Arrow.
Steve was a kind, warm, friendly and generous man who loved his family mightily and treasured his friends greatly. He was the ultimate optimist when it came to life and he never met a stranger. He will be greatly missed by those who both loved him and knew him.
A Memorial Reception will take place on Sunday, October 11, from 1:00pm – 3:00pm in Blakeford Hall at Blakeford at Green Hills, 11 Burton Hills Blvd, Nashville, TN.
The family would like to thank the staff of Blakeford at Green Hills, including the Assisted Living team, the Woodcrest Skilled Nursing team, and the Alive Hospice team. Their love, care, and kindness meant so much to him and is greatly appreciated.
