Edna Sue Brown Raulston (Suzy) was married to Samuel Robert (Sam Bob) Raulston for 40 years before his untimely death. She grieved this loss deeply but lived another lifetime with family and friends after his death. She is survived by daughters Holly Raulston McCathren (Randall) and Katharine Raulston, son, Samuel Robert (Bob) Raulston, Jr. (Becky), grandchildren, Alyson McCathren Solloway (Adam), Gregory Raulston McCathren (Hanna), Sarah Olivia Raulston, Susan Camille Raulston and Samuel Paul Raulston and many nieces and nephews. She was lovingly called Mom R by her first grandchild Lauren Elizabeth McCathren (deceased) and subsequently by all of her grandchildren, as well as friends of her children and grandchildren who grew to love her as a surrogate mother/grandmother.
Suzy was born in Jasper, Tennessee on August 18, 1923 to Veda Irene and Newman Holland Brown and is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Samuel Robert Raulston, her daughter Pamela Ann Raulston Olita and her granddaughter Lauren. She was the sole survivor of seven children.
Suzy and “Sammy”, as she fondly called her husband, traveled the world together and visited Russia, China and many other European, Central and South American countries. She was an adventurer who lived her life to the fullest. She was a woman ahead of her time. When she was 18, in a time that very few women went to college, she got on a train alone in Chattanooga, TN with her trunk and suitcase to begin a college career at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She was a good student and her outgoing personality won her a place in the Phi Mu Sorority.
Suzy went on to become a medical technologist and after raising her family she taught in the Marion County School System for 16 years. During her lifetime she was an active member of her church, Holly Avenue United Methodist in South Pittsburg, TN where she and Sam Bob raised their family. She was a Sunday School teacher, administrative board member and choir member at her church. She was an active community member and a volunteer with the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society and South Pittsburg’s annual Cornbread Festival.
Suzy was a member of the South Pittsburg Garden Club and Women’s Club, a Girl Scout leader and member of the Moccasin Bend Girl Scout Council. She was also a board member of the Marion County Speech and Hearing Clinic, member of the South Pittsburg Planning Commission and South Pittsburg Historical Preservation Society as well as a member of the South Pittsburg Zoning Board. Suzy moved to The St. Paul Senior Living Community in Nashville twelve years ago to be closer to her daughters. She had many friends at The St. Paul and warmly welcomed new residents. Suzy participated in every activity offered and had a special group of friends that called themselves “Wrinkles”.
Suzy will be remembered by her family and friends as fun-loving, straightforward, generous and as someone who let her opinions be known whether popular or not. She was spunky and the epitome of optimism, strength and grace. In lieu of flowers please make contributions to Alive Hospice Inc. or the South Pittsburg Historic Preservation Society .
