Al met my father Herb when they were both growing up in Southern California. Every summer  their fathers would take the boys camping all summer in the High Sierras at Tuolomne Meadows to fish and hike. (They bathed once a month if they needed it) We knew him as Uncle Al, as he and my father continued the tradition by going to the Sierras every summer with us when my brother and I were growing up. When a child, I remember being surprised that he actually seemed to listen to what I said. Even if he had a bad day fishing, he never lost his temper. He was very patient with us. He was always carefully dressed and seemed to stay cleaner than everyone else.
