Thomas Harold Mitchell was a man of warmth and integrity. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a devoted friend. He was a gifted storyteller, he loved playing Santa Claus, and asked everyone he met, “Where are you from originally?”.
He was born in LA (as he liked to call Lower Alabama). He spent his early childhood in the Bibb County area and also on the University of Alabama campus while his dad pursued his degree.
After his family moved to Nashville, he attended Two Rivers High School. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was also an Eagle Scout.
After one year at Tennessee Tech he joined the Marine Corps, following in the footsteps of his father. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam as a Forward Air Controller and was part of the Tet Offensive. During his tour he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. While serving, he was interviewed by a news reporter and was featured in many documentaries throughout the following years, including the recent Ken Burns Vietnam series.
After serving he returned to college at Belmont, receiving a degree in Business Management. While there he met his future wife Joan, whom he married in 1972.
He worked his entire career in the insurance industry, starting with Blair, Follin, Allen, and Walker, and ending his career with Pancoast and Associates.
He was a member of Crievewood Baptist Church where he enjoyed the many friendships made throughout the years, especially in the men’s Sunday School class.
He was also a longtime member of Nashville’s Downtown Kiwanis Club.
He was preceded in death by parents, Monnie and Harold Mitchell. He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Joan, his son Steve (and wife Serah), his son Michael (and wife Greta), and four grandchildren; Virginia, Evie, Thomas, and Wilson.
