Most of all, Tobias loved spending time with his three brothers and his many friends. He enjoyed traveling the world, experiencing different cultures, exploring cities, “nerding out” on water infrastructure, and meeting new people. From his mom, he cherished all things in the natural world and he always looked for fish and critters in urban rivers. Rooting for Vanderbilt football and basketball and the New York Knicks was a favorite pastime with his dad and brothers and recent winning seasons brought him much joy. He was in his happy place at the Villager Tavern with his friends.
Tobias attended elementary school at Christ the King School and graduated high school in 2018 from Montgomery Bell Academy. After high school, Tobias attended Vanderbilt University where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering in 2022. While at Vanderbilt, he served as a research assistant to Dr. Hiba Baroud and received the Greg A. Andrews Memorial Award in Civil Engineering. Tobias also received an Erasmus Mondus Joint Masters Scholarship from the European Commission in 2022 and earned a joint Master’s degree in Flood Risk Management in 2024 from the Technical University of Dresden (Germany), IHE Delft (Netherlands), Universität Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain), and the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). Most recently, Tobias was a student in the Doctorate Program in Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and a research assistant to Dr. Paola Passalacqua.
Tobias has a gentle, kind, and caring soul, and his brothers all describe him as “wicked smart”. He was diagnosed with clear cell sarcoma, an ultra rare cancer, and fought valiantly for the life he loved this past year. His family is grateful to Dr. Vivek Subbiah, Sara Cannon Research Institute, for pursuing effective, innovative treatments. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Target Cancer Foundation (targetcancer.org) for rare cancer research in his memory.
Tobias is survived by his parents, John and Mekayle, his brothers, August (Melanie Hochman), Rem (Madison Cilluffo), and Finn, his nephew, Ryder, his grandfather, Francis J. Houghton, Jr. (Helen Handley), and many uncles, aunts, and cousins. He is also survived by a passel of pets who loved him. Tobias is preceded in death by his grandparents, Margot Dooling Houghton, Barbara Wheeler Grossman, and Arthur Grossman.
A service celebrating Tobias will take place on Saturday, December 27 at 11:00 am at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3001 Belmont Boulevard, Nashville, Tennessee.
