Preceded in death by her sweet son Tommy; loving husband of 65 years Jason; parents Dewitt Sanford Smartt and Thelma Willette (Dedmon) Smartt; and brother James (Josephine). What a special group of people she had to welcome her home along with some dear friends!
Sue is survived and will always be loved by her daughters and sons-in-law Laura and Greg Hunter, Sandra and Paul Jankowski, and Bonnye and Chris Schwerdt; loving grandchildren Jason (Christy), Will (Lauren), Lexie, Avery, Braden, Laura Beth, Allie, Weston, Jenna and Julia; great-grandchildren Riley, Norah, Ellie, and Amaya.
She was born in Mahone (Wilson County), TN in her grandmother’s farm house and grew up in East Nashville. She went to Inglewood Elementary and Litton High School. During her teenage years she worked at her mother’s grocery store, Smartt’s Bi-Rite. After graduating, she attended Lipscomb University and later went to work in the ROTC office in the engineering building at Vanderbilt University. There she met a handsome engineering student who soon stole her heart and they were married in 1955. Over the next 65 years, their life was centered around their ever growing family. Dance recitals, ballgames, graduations-they were at every special occasion. Some of their favorite times were family gatherings and her family’s favorite memories took place at Grandmama’s and Granddaddy’s!
Sue enjoyed being with her family, going to church, spending time with her special friends, going to Pennington Bend Home Demonstration Club for 50+ years, selling Avon and socializing with her customers, laughing, blessing others by writing and sending cards and praying for those she loved so much.
She was a long time member at Pennington Bend Church of Christ, later attending Lincoya Hills Baptist Church, with Jason, where they worshipped with some of their closest friends.
A celebration of life service will be held at Hibbett and Hailey Funeral Home on July 1, at 11:00 am with Brother George Ibach and Brother Rodney Cloud officiating. Friends and family are invited to a visitation with the family from 5:00-7:00 Thursday evening, June 30 and Friday, July 1 from 9:30-11:00 before the service. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, with Sons-in-law and Grandsons serving as pallbearers.
If you’d like to bless an organization in her honor, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Special Olympics were dear to her heart.
