William B. Scott, Jr. was born on March 30, 1991, and lived a life defined by kindness, loyalty, and quiet strength. He graduated from the University School of Nashville in 2009 and later earned his degree from Nashville State Community College. At the time of his passing, William was nearing completion of his Exercise Science degree at Marymount College, a goal that reflected his dedication to health and fitness.
William’s interests were wide-ranging. He loved motorcycles, gaming, working out, and, famously, Panda Express. During his years at the University School of Nashville, he played both lacrosse and soccer. William was naturally curious and never stopped learning. He once taught himself to play the piano in a single summer and was teaching himself Japanese. He could paint and, for a time, considered pursuing glassblowing. Exceptionally bright, he approached his interests with curiosity and humility, never feeling the need to show off what he knew.
Those who knew William will remember him as a gentle giant—soft-spoken, humble, and deeply compassionate. He had a calming presence that made others feel comfortable and accepted. His wit and sharp observations were memorable to all who knew him and remain a source of comfort to those who loved him. He was authentic and honest, never afraid to speak the truth. While he had little patience for pretense or foolishness, he met life’s absurdities with an easy smile.
Above all else, William was kind. He was decent and genuinely good— a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend. William was also an exceptional colleague who earned the respect and admiration of everyone he worked with through his dedication, reliability, and willingness to help others. He was a man of few words, but those closest to him never doubted how much they were loved.
The outpouring of love, support, and heartfelt memories shared with his family during this unimaginably difficult time is a testament to the remarkable impact he had on so many lives. He was the kind of person people could count on—steady, genuine, and always true to himself. While his absence leaves an immeasurable void, the memories he created and the love he shared will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. We celebrate a life lived with integrity, humor, and so much love.
William is survived by his mother, Kim Avington; his sisters, Courtney Scott and Whitney (Rob) Wagner; his nieces, Sofia and Gabriella; his uncle, Dwayne Avington; and a host of USN student-athletes, colleagues, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, William Barry Scott Sr., and his grandmother, Doris M. Taylor.
A celebration of life will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at University School of Nashville. All are welcome to celebrate the remarkable person he was and the community he leaves behind.
