South Bay’s very own Jan “Coach” Chapman passed away on March 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations. An athlete, coach, educator, and mentor, Jan’s influence extended far beyond the playing field, shaping the lives of countless students and athletes.
Born in 1936 in Arkansas City, Kansas, Jan was a natural competitor from the start. A three-sport standout in high school, he led his football team to the Kansas State Championship as an All-State Quarterback. His athletic excellence continued at Arkansas City Junior College, where he earned the Kansas State Javelin Title and competed in football and basketball before accepting a football scholarship to the University of Arizona.
Following a stint in the U.S. Navy, where he played football, basketball, and baseball, Jan transferred to the University of San Diego, where he cemented his legacy as one of their greatest athletes of all time. A three-year starting quarterback and punter, Jan threw for 3,573 yards and 23 touchdowns, ranking among the top quarterbacks in the nation. As a punter, he ranked third in the nation as a sophomore and sixth as a senior, setting records that still stand today. His leadership was undeniable, serving as co-captain of the football team and student body president. His crowning moment came when he led USD to a thrilling 21 to 20 upset over a Marine Corps team featuring four future NFL stars. In 1995, his achievements became permanent, as Jan was inducted into the USD Hall of Fame.
Jan’s talents caught the attention of the professional football world, and he briefly signed with the San Diego Chargers under legendary coach Sid Gillman, with Jack Kemp as his roommate. Not only that, but he was the head statistician for the San Diego Chargers from 1968 to 1995. However, his true calling was not just playing the game, but shaping the next generation as “Coach” Chapman.
For 55 years, Jan dedicated himself to coaching and teaching, earning countless “Coach of the Year” and “Teacher of the Year” honors. He coached football, basketball, and track at several high schools, including Marian, Castle Park, Bonita Vista, Hilltop, Eastlake and Southwestern Community College. There, he spent decades as the quarterback coach and later as head coach, breathing life into the program and mentoring hundreds of young athletes. His influence was so profound that in 2007, he was inducted into the Southwestern College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Jan’s expertise and leadership earned him deep respect within the football community, and in 2005, he was inducted into the Cowley County Athletic Hall of Fame, adding yet another honor to his decorated career.
Jan’s life was about more than personal achievements. He was a mentor, a leader, and a source of unwavering support for those around him. He married his first love, Barbara Correll, in 1962 (1942-1995) , and together they raised four children: Jan Jr. (1963-2015), Christy (partner John), Tricia, and David (wife Natalie). After Barbara’s passing in 1995, Jan reunited with an old classmate, Christie Ross, and they married in 1999. Christie has three children: Joe Loeschnig (1963-2018), Diane Ross (partner Bruce), and Susan Hill (1970-2019). His legacy lives on in his grandchildren: Melanie, Amanda, Mitchell, and Micah, and his great grandson Aaden: all of whom carry forward his lessons of love, perseverance, integrity, and passion.
Jan “Coach” Chapman’s life was nothing short of extraordinary. An elite athlete, a respected coach, a beloved teacher, and a cherished husband, father, and grandfather…he lived with purpose, left an indelible mark on everyone he met, and truly embodied the spirit of excellence. His impact will never be forgotten.
