Phillip Andrew Alcala Sr., 82, of San Diego, California, was called to his eternal rest on June 11, 2024. Born on March 6, 1942, Phillip—known as Phil to those close to him—was a man who lived a life marked by dedication, warmth, and a distinctive sense of humor.
A proud alumnus of Sweetwater High School, Phil answered the call of duty and served in the US Air Force from February 5, 1960, until his honorable discharge on November 5, 1962. He subsequently worked as a skilled welder at North Island, and his dedication to service continued as he became actively involved with the Committee On Chicano Rights (CCR), where he was instrumental in organizing and securing various civil rights activities.
Phil's professional journey later led him to become a cross-country truck driver, an occupation that suited his love for adventure and the open road. His affable nature and spirit of camaraderie were also evident in his time spent as a bouncer alongside his friends in National City, where he was well-respected and remembered fondly.
To those who knew him, Phil was a beacon of joy and resilience. His interests were diverse; he relished the outdoors through hunting, enjoyed the intricacies of playing pool, and loved to express his zest for life through dance. Phil never turned down a chance to soak in the sun at the beach or to visit a casino, where his laughter was as plentiful as his good luck.
Phil's memory is cherished by his beloved wife, Adelina, their sons Phillip Jr. and Philip Andres, and their daughter, Anna. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy endures in the lives of those he touched with his enduring love and strength.
The family invites loved ones to join them in honoring Phil's life. Visitation is scheduled for June 26, 2024, at 5 PM at Funeraria del Angel National City. A funeral service will be held the following morning on June 27, 2024, at 10 AM. The interment will then proceed at Glen Abbey Memorial Park and Mortuary at 12 PM. The staff at Funeraria del Angel National City, 607 National City Blvd, National City, CA 91950, is providing compassionate care and guidance to Phil's family during this sorrowful time.
