It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Brian Bales. Brian leaves to grieve his passing his sister Val (Iain) and his sister-in-law Michelle. He also leaves nieces Kelly, Kathy and Jennifer, nephew Jason and 3 grand nephews. Brian was predeceased by his parents Bud and Pam, his brother Dave, and his nephew Neil.
Brian was dealt a difficult hand in life when he contracted Meningitis at the age of 4 that left him with many disabilities. While he was active he enjoyed a life full of many of his favorite activities. He participated with the Manitoba for Disabilities Bowling league and activities. He was an avid, lifelong Super Fan and supporter of the Winnipeg Jets and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was able to attend games, practices and events where he was sometimes fortunate enough to meet with the players. These situations continued to give Brian joy throughout his whole life, being able to share the experience and show signed momentos to others. In the last few years he became a big fan of the Goldeyes and Blue Jays. He was always up to have a conversation about recent sporting games.
During his younger years, when he was more physically able, he thoroughly enjoyed spending much of his time riding his bicycle around the community. Brian held a part-time job for a number of years as a downtown messenger for Winnipeg Dental. This job added so much enjoyment to his life. He loved meeting and talking to new people and having the responsibility of this job gave him such pride. He created many memories that he continued to share throughout his life.
After the passing of his mother, Brian lived independently with support from family and Home Care. He thrived during the years he was independent going out and about when able. His family was so proud that he was able to live a full life doing things he enjoyed given his limitations. He didn’t need a lot to have happiness. The television was a main part of his elder years, a good John Wayne movie, a wrestling show, any sports show or old game show along with a bottle of Pepsi and he was set for the evening.
Brian spent the last few years at Beacon Hill Lodge. He enjoyed the staff on his floor and developed nice relationships with some. The family is extremely grateful for the care that was provided to him. We are so thankful that he ended up on Nurse Betty’s floor. She was patient and understanding of Brian’s difficulties and gave him much love and respect. The 8th floor staff were all gems for the care they gave Brian. Thank you.
A short Graveside for Brian will be held Friday, August 25, 2023, 3:00 p.m. at Green Acres Cemetery.
