With deep sadness we announce the passing of Jean, at 89 years of age, on March 20, 2025, at St. Boniface Hospital, with family by her side. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Left to mourn her passing are her son Ken (Tanis), granddaughters Shantel and Jaclyn, daughter Angela, sister Marge Belsham, sister-in-law Verna Kozie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by her husband Mike Ryback, infant brother Mernie, brother Clarence Kozie, brother-in-law Charles Belsham, and parents Antonia and Steve Kozie.
Jean was born and raised on the family farm in Hazelglen, MB. In 1951, she married Mike, and in 1955, they settled in Transcona. Throughout her career, she worked at various restaurants, Woolworths, and Woolco, but she was especially proud of her time managing the Red Grill at Woolco.
A devoted member of St. Michael’s Parish and the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League for the past 70 years, Jean cherished the friendships she made within her parish community, particularly the social events and perogy making. She had a passion for travel, with Hawaii holding a special place in her heart, and found joy in cooking, baking, gardening, and, most of all, spending time with her granddaughters.
The family extends sincere thanks to the compassionate staff at Concordia and St. Boniface Hospitals for their care and support during this difficult time.
The service will be held Wednesday, March 26 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church (Day St. and Yale Ave E in Transcona), with reception and entombment to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean’s memory to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church or a charity of your choice.
