LAURA (LAURIE) FRANCISCA SOPHIA MARIA SCHELLEKENS (nee KERVEL) Peacefully on July 14, 2015, at the age of 84, our mother and Oma (grandmother) was called to Heaven to join her late husband Peter. She was predeceased by her parents Wybrandus and Sophia, stepmother Maria; brother Jean; sister-in-law Ria, and son-in-law Garnet. She is survived by one brother Wybo; sister Josephine (Cees); sister-in-law Jenny (Jean); son Rick (Lori) with grandchildren Dwight (Becky), Michelle (Richard), Kaylene (Tony), Chelsey, Matthew, Joshua and Ben; daughter Jeanette (Tim) with grandchildren Eric, Cole, Brock, Angus, Jamie, Curt, Desirae and TJ; son Wayne (Kris) with grandchildren Mia and Nicole; her 14 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Laurie was born in Padang Brahrang, Indonesia when it was a Dutch colony. After the war her family moved back to the Netherlands and Mom became a Montessori teacher. Laurie came to Canada in 1954, with her brother Wybo and she settled in Vancouver and was a nurse's aide. Laurie and Peter met in Vancouver and were married on August 11, 1962. They moved to Winnipeg and lived there since. Laurie worked at Eaton's but stayed home to raise their three children. Later she worked at University of Manitoba. She volunteered wherever she could and was a CWL member and Cub leader. She loved playing cards and taking the occasional gambling bus trip to the States. She made friends easily and left a very positive impression on anyone she met. She still kept in touch with several friends from her childhood. She always helped people wherever she went, and volunteered for 16 years at Tache Nursing Home. Flowers are gratefully declined in favour of donations in Laurie's memory to the Stroke Association of Manitoba, Children's Hospital or Amnesty International. The family would like to thank Dr. Karen Appel who was outstanding in taking care of Laurie in her final days at Seven Oaks Hospital, and all the staff at Holy Family Home who made her brief stay there memorable. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy. #1 East at Navin Road, Winnipeg, MB.
