Louis Marie Joseph Maurice

Louis Maurice was born in Wauchope Saskatchewan and passed away on February 11, 2012 at the age of 93. Louis is survived by Agathe Maurice, his loving wife of 70 wonderful years; his two sons Gerald (Wilma) and Raymond (Susan); two grandsons Stephane and Rene; and his sisters-in-law Agnes Magnan, Angeline Bedard, Sr. Odile Magnan, Gisele Courcelles (Lionel), and Berthe Remillard (Yves).

Louis was predeceased by his parents Louis Maurice and Marie Carles; his brothers Joseph, Stephane and Jean; and his brothers-in-law Fr. Gonzague, Joseph, Gerard, Marius, Zephirin and Edouard Magnan.

Dad and Mom always worked as a team to reach their goal of providing a safe and caring home for their family. Like many people of their generation, during the early years of their marriage they each worked two jobs. After a few years they had saved enough to build their first of two houses in their "spare time". Every Christmas Eve they would fondly recall the Christmas Eve day that they had spent shingling that first home in Winnipeg. They would shake their heads in amazement when remembering how hard they had worked and then smile while telling us what fun they had doing it.

Once they started their family Mom stayed home while Dad continued to work two jobs so that they could provide their boys with the best life possible. Dad's main job was that of a mechanic-welder with the mechanical shops of the City of St. Vital which later became the City of Winnipeg. Throughout his working life Dad somehow found time to be a member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of CUPE. Right to the end Dad was proud of his Honorary Life Membership with CUPE Local 500 E & M Unit and wore his union ring with pride.

Upon retirement Mom and Dad took up square and round dancing and traveled throughout the province and as far west as Calgary to attend dances and enjoy the social activities. To hear Dad talk about the tables of tea sandwiches and baking that the ladies provided one would be forgiven if they concluded that for Dad the main event was eating rather than dancing.

In retirement Dad also pursued his interest in wood working and gardening. Never having been a swimmer, Dad took lessons while in his mid sixties. Swimming became an activity that Mom and Dad continued to enjoy five days a week at Concordia Pool until Dad was diagnosed with advanced prostrate cancer at the age of 91. Up until that point Mom and Dad had lived independently in their own home. Deciding it was time to move to an independent living residence, Mom and Dad chose Manoir de la Cathedrale where they have been touched by many acts of kindness from both fellow

residents and staff.

The family would like to thank Dad's family doctor, Dr. F. Ball for his kindness and dedication towards Mom and Dad; the amazing staff at Manoir de la Cathedrale and all of the staff from Home Care WRHA who provided such tender care for Dad. A very special thank you is extended to Germaine Leger, palliative care RN from the WRHA. Germaine, along with providing Dad and the family with your knowledge and experience you showed compassion and always helped us feel strong as we took this journey together.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 11:00 A.M at Green Acres Funeral Home.
