Margaret was predeceased by her only child, Bill, just three weeks ago; her husband, William (Wally) in 2003; all of Wally’s brothers and sisters; and her best friend since childhood, Doris Annan, in 2009.
She will be greatly missed by her much-loved daughter-in-law, Arlene Petkau Petrie, and her two cherished grandsons, Graham and Duncan. She will always be remembered for her kind and gentle ways by her special nieces, Linda Parker and Doreen Wozny.
Margaret was the only child of her Scottish-born parents, William and Georgina Gould. She was their pride and joy. Mum loved her Elmwood neighbourhood and her Scottish roots. Her bright blue eyes twinkled when she switched on her lilting Scottish brogue. Celebrating Robbie Burns Day was a highlight in their home.
In 1950, Margaret married “Wally” Petrie, another Scot and Elmwood boy. Together they made their first and only home on Talbot Avenue, where they lived for 53 years. Imagine their joy when their redheaded son, Bill, was born in 1955. They doted on him. He was the centre of their lives. In later years, Mum’s dream of becoming a Nana came true when Bill and Arlene presented her and Dad with two grandsons, Graham in 1999 and Duncan in 2002.
After Dad died in 2003, Bill helped Mum stay in her own home until 2009, when ill health meant she needed to move into Misericordia Place. We will always be grateful to the entire staff of MP3 where Mum spent her last six years. Thank you for caring for her with dignity and love.
Mum enjoyed simple pleasures her whole life—drinking a hot cup of tea, playing Gilbert and Sullivan tunes on her piano, throwing a near-perfect 10-pin bowling game with Doris at Chateau Lanes and watching her grandsons grow into fine young men. Mum was always so content and gracious her entire life, a role model for us all.
In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted for the Bill Petrie Memorial Scholarship, c/o Elmwood High School Legacy Fund, with cheques payable to The Winnipeg Foundation, 1350 - 1 Lombard Pl., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 0X3 or online at www.wpgfnd.org
A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 9 at 10 am at Green Acres Funeral Chapel, Hwy. #1 E at Navin Road, Winnipeg MB (204) 222-3241. Interment beside her loving husband will follow the service in Green Acres Memorial Gardens.
