SUSANNE ANNA JOHANNA KUILMAN (NEE PELTZER)
April 29, 1936 - October 15, 2023
We are sad to announce the passing of Susanne Anna Johanna Kuilman, she passed away peacefully in her home, with family at her side, on October 15, 2023, at the age of 87, after a short battle with cancer. We will miss her very much.
She will be sadly missed by her son Martin Kuilman and his family including wife Colleen, son Benjamin (Meagan) and daughter Lisa (Braden). She was predeceased by her husband Michael Hrycenko, her daughter Helene Lynch (Sigmund) and her sister Annemie Peltzer Crossno (Gary). She will be lovingly remembered by Helene’s family, including grand-daughter Nicole Tannen (Dillon) and her great-granddaughter Iris, grandson Daniel Lynch (Melissa) and grand-daughter Michelle Gustafson and great-grandson Braeden. She will also be missed by her siblings in the Netherlands, brothers Matth Peltzer, Hans (Grada), Huub (Jose) and Jos (Nelleke), and sisters Ria Vandenbosch (Peter), and Crina Schoonens (Jan), and many nieces and nephews of the extended family and many friends.
Susanne was born on April 29, 1936 in s’ Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, the eldest child of the late Johan and Helena (van Haaren) Peltzer. There, after boarding school in the south of Holland, she would work with her father and sister Annemie in his hair salon until 1958. She married her first husband Cornelius (Casey) Kuilman in 1958 and would move with him that same year to Burlington, Ontario, Canada.
In Canada she had many jobs over the years including working in a hair salon, as a bookkeeper, and for Simpson’s. After meeting Michael Hrycenko in 1974 she would join him in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with Martin in 1979.
Susanne spent many years with Michael helping to care for his aging brothers Bill and Tony, still on the homestead in St Norbert Manitoba, and cousin Julia. She helped Michael in the business until his death in 2020. At that time she sold the equipment business and moved from her only house in Winnipeg to her final home, an apartment, that she thoroughly enjoyed with many friends and family, including those around her from the building.
Mom enjoyed cooking for family dinners and for other company, and especially enjoyed making too much food so we all had some to take home with us. When she wasn’t cooking she would often be making travel plans to see her daughter and sister in California, or back home to the Netherlands to see family. She would use her Dutch home, usually staying with her brother Hans, as a home base from which to travel to other places in and around Europe.
We would especially like to thank family friend, Janet Penny, who came to help care for mom in mom’s final weeks, mom’s nephew John Crossno and his wife Sandi for visiting during this difficult time, and to granddaughter Nicole Tannen for also helping to care for mom. Finally, a thank you to the palliative care team that visited mom often over her final days and showed such compassion and care. They helped mom pass as she wished, in her own home with family and friends by her side. Rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
