Sister Barbara Ann Zeller

August 18, 1945August 1, 2019

Sister Barbara Ann Zeller died on August 1, 2019 in Georgetown, Indiana. She was born on August 18, 1945 in Evansville, Indiana to Wilbert and Dorothy Tremor Zeller. Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on September 12, 1963 and received the name Sister Dorothy Jean. She professed Final Vows September 15, 1974.

Sister Barbara Ann earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree from North Texas State University. Of her 56 years as a Sister of Providence, almost from the beginning, her ministry was related to services to the elderly. Among her assignments within the Congregation were Director of Retirement, administrator of its infirmary, and Director of Gerontology. In 1979, she began the work to build the HUD housing, Maryvale Apartments, adjacent to the Motherhouse property. In 1982 she became Administrator of Providence Retirement Home in New Albany where she served until 1994. It was in 1995 that she began Providence Self Sufficiency Ministries which began as a home for foster children and has grown into care for the elderly at the Villas of Guerin Woods, and subsidized housing at Meadows of Guerin and Guerin Woods, and a reunification program for mothers and children centered around Patchwork House and its satellite apartments, all in Georgetown, Indiana.

Sister Barbara Ann was a woman who saw needs and worked with tenacity and determination to meet them. She was motivated by a deep compassion for the persons whose lives were affected by lack of services to meet their needs. She literally worked until a few weeks before she died to give service to these people.

Sister is survived a brother, Bruce Zeller (Kathy) of Carmel and two sisters, Marilyn Lankford (Steve) of Evansville and Pam Reine (Chuck) of Indianapolis. Sr Barbara was such a dear, kind woman. She was dynamic and driven. Her passion to serve God and minister to the residents at Guerin Woods was beautiful. She loved and lived so sincerely. She will be so missed. We are so sad we just learned about her death. Love and prayers to her Community, her family and the residents she cared for so dearly.

I worked with S. Barbara in designing artistic features in the building of Mother Theodore Hall East and West in Providence Healthcare at our Sisters of Providence Motherhouse at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, IN. I enjoyed our working relationship and mourn the loss of her vibrant life with us and those with whom she shared ministry. RIP, Barbara!

Look in Wikipedia to define the word DYNAMO and you will see a picture of Sister Barbara. She had founder in her DNA upon arrival and she was a woman on a mission. She left a footprint on Southern Indiana that will be impossible to fill. I am grateful to have served as her adviser for eleven years as she grew her ministry, and she promised me I would not have to work bingo to get into heaven. It was such a relief for this little Baptist!! I will miss her energy and the example she was of a truly successful woman.

I worked at Providence Retirement Home in the 80's as a receptionist and could not have asked for a better boss than Sister Barbara Ann. She was always helpful to me and the compassion she had towards the residents was very loving, caring and straight from her heart. Sister Barbara Ann will be missed by us all. May God wrap his loving arms around her and welcome her to his kingdom with joy in his heart.

I was blessed to have known Sister Barbara through the many opportunities she gave me to participate in helping with events and the PSSM website. She was very special to me. I considered her a mentor and a friend. She will be sorely missed, but my heart is filled with joy that she is in her long awaited, well-deserved place in heaven. Rest in peace Sister.
