I know it's late but I only just found out about the passing of this great man. I met Bernie at the 2016 APA convention. He was so kind to me, a no-name social worker from Brooklyn. We discussed research ideas and corresponded ever since. I just e-mailed him to wish him a merry Christmas and I received notification that it could not be delivered. Bernie passed too soon. He was a kind man and taught me much in the little time I got to know him. He spent time sharing his knowledge and validating my ideas. We were even in the process of working on a group psychotherapy manual for shyness. To his family, I am so sorry for your loss. I know it has been a few months but I hope you find comfort in his memory this Christmastime. Rest in peace, Bernie. You will forever be in our memory.

Dear Rozana and Family,

I was in the Psych Dep't Grad Program at KSU and was a few years behind Bernie.  He showed me the ropes and treated me like a brother.  We got to know each other very well for a period of about two years as each of us studied late into the night in the ramshackle grad student office area in the bell tower/attic of Anderson Hall.   Bernie was preparing for his Preliminary Exams and I was completing my Master's Thesis.   Every so often we'd take a break from studying and would walk down together to a nearby convenience store for a soda or a cup of coffee.  I also had the pleasure of meeting you, Rozana, several times.  You were a delight.  You must have been 5 or 6 years old at that time.  I kept in touch with Bernie only very sporadically and will always treasure our friendship and camaraderie.  Please accept my sincere condolences.

I'm still in disbelief that Professor Carducci has passed away.  He was such a lively and spirited professor and person.  It's hard to believe he was ever a shy guy. 

I had the honor and pleasure of being Prof. Carducci's student in the Fall of 2016 for Psych 101.  I'm a non-traditional student (I have a BA and MBA but I was in school chipping away at a nursing degree) so I've had my fair share of Professors and Prof. Carducci was easily one of my top 3 ever.  He genuinely cared about his students and went out of his way to make sure we were learning.  He was a gifted educator.

I'm also the child of immigrants who grew up in Southern CA so when I would visit him during office hours we would both talk about our experiences as first generation college students.  It didn't take long for our conversations would turn to food because we would both be hungry (we were both trying to lose weight and his office hours were at lunch time) so he'd be eating his carrots and I'd be eating my seaweed chips and we would start with his shyness research and end with all the yummy foods/restaurants we grew up with in the LA area.  He was such a funny guy!  It was thanks to our chats during office hours that we decided to work on translating some shyness surveys from the 70's which led to my attending and co-presenting with him at the APA Convention in DC last Summer.  I was thrilled and honored to present with him!

Rozana, he spoke so highly of you and your husband and daughter.  He was so proud of you.  He also spoke so highly of Kathleen; all of her delicious cooking and their fun adventures together.  My deepest condolences to his entire family.

Dear Rozana, and family: 
I am so very sad to hear about this terrible loss of your dear dad. My heart and prayers go out to you. Bernie was always so proud of his daughter, and then his son-in-law and granddaughter.  I was his editor on an early edition of his Personality text and he always talked to me about his Rozana. When we worked together on that text, he put on the dedication page, that beautiful photo of him hugging you when you were young. I loved that photo which shows how proud he was and how much he loved his daughter. 
I feel so privileged to have known him and to have worked with him. He was a kind and generous soul who went out of his way for others. When he heard my son played guitar, he got him a Fender guitar shirt. And as a fellow Italian, he always invited me to the Italian American Psychologists dinner and made sure I got one of his special IAPA stickers. He lit up a room and always made you feel welcomed.  His passion for life, his family, teaching, and research was always evident. He was a very special person that I'm so honored to have known.  I will miss him.

We are very saddened to hear about the loss of Dr. Carducci. Raechel and I met Dr. Carducci at a psychology conference in April, and we remember him as a very friendly and enthusiastic person. I truly thank him for allowing me to pursue my interest in cross-cultural research on shyness in Japan and the US, for shyness has been a huge part of my life. He told me that it's totally okay to be shy, which were some of the most comforting words I have ever heard. Dr. Carducci also graciously connected me with research colleagues in Japan, Dr. Matsuda and Dr. Sato. Dr. Carducci and I talked about publishing a co-authored essay together to share our story with other undergraduates. Although we are sad our collaboration has come to an end, we will cherish our memories with you in our hearts forever.

I met Bernie only once, during a trip to Italy he took to visit the University I was working with. 

In that occasion I showed him Padua and, while we were walking around the city, he talked to me about his daughter and his family and it was so heartwarming to hear how much love he had for them. 

Even now, sometimes, I find myself thinking back at what he said to me about his mother, who had passed away sometime before: he was telling me about all the travelling they did together and he said, smiling: "I miss her, but we did so many things together and visited so many places, that I'm just happy I had the chance to".  What a beautiful way to live life. 

Un buon viaggio, Bernie.  And a prayer from the bottom of my heart to all of you who will miss him.

This news has shaken and saddened me greatly. My cugino Bernie was a proud member of the Cepranese Club of Michigan. The club was named after a small town in Italy called Ceprano, where all of our family's ancestors came from during the 1900s. He will be missed at our summer picnics and our Christmas Celebration. His smile and fun-loving attitude were infectious and will be deeply missed. You're gone much, much too soon cugino. All I can say is I have another angel watching over me. To all of those in the family and close to Bernie, I'm so, so sorry for your loss- all of ours loss. Rest in the peace of God's perpetual light until we're united once  again.  Love you cugino. 

Bernie my Buddy. From Bassett High School to working at Millers Outpost. From meeting at a pastrami restaurant called The Hat and having Tacos at his favorite taco place on Valley Blvd. in La Puente. We will be joining him in spirit every time we now go to these places.

Dr. Bernie Carducci was my very first Psychology Professor when I returned back to school in January on 2017. After class one day he told me I asked a great question in our Psych 101 class and said "I knew a light bulb went off and said to myself this kids got it!". I was lucky enough to have him as a professor as he would retire from teaching that summer. I became even luckier when I started working as a research assistant at the Shyness Institute there on campus at Indiana University Southeast. We were currently working on a college suicide project and looking forward to finishing it this week and presenting it at the IASS (Indiana Academy of Social Sciences) on October 12th. He was a fantastic and brilliant man who inspired thousands of young minds in class and brought the awareness of "Shyness and Small Talk" to millions all over the world with his pocket books and guides to becoming "Successfully Shy". I will miss our conversations about our future events like; discussions of what we were going to present at the American Psychological Association next year in Chicago or where around the world we could present his shyness work. He became a big part of my life in such a short amount of time. He wrote a recommendation letter for me this May on a scholarship that I recently accepted. The Chancellor's Medallion Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship I accredit to him and helping me to achieve my goals and having unconditional faith and inspiration in me and my future abilities. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, colleagues and students at this difficult time. He will be dearly missed many, but certainly adored by all.
