Bertha R. Atkins would like you all to know that she is officially retired – her work here is done. She received “the call,” or more accurately, an offer she couldn’t refuse, for a trip from which she won’t be returning. She is headed to the heavens, where her new position comes with an excellent sign-on bonus, a joyful reunion with family and friends, and the highest level of job Security imaginable. There the grass grows green, the flowers bloom and the red birds sing, followed by an eternal happy hour.
Bertha R. Atkins, 90, passed away, on September 25, 2026, at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital. She was born January 10, 1936, at Floyds Knobs, Indiana to the late Grover and Margaret Phillips Mayfield. Bertha was a hardworking woman that kept busy with life working well into her 80’s. She was a proud and active member of the Floyd County VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post 3281. She also volunteered throughout New Albany with other fraternal organizations and community events. She will be missed.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Betty J. Forman; and two brothers, James and Robert Mayfield.
Surviving are daughters, Bertha A. Morrow (Keith) of Bethany Beach, DE and Brenda K. Whitworth (Earl) of Corydon, IN; grandchildren, Ryan and Kyle Stackhouse; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Linda Shickell and Mary Cundiff of New Albany, IN. as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Visitation will be held at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Rd, New Albany, Indiana 47150, on September 29, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and on September 30, 2026, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.
