I will never forget making a phone call from an old 1980 something cranberry  car. long before anyone else had cell phones.

I remember meeting Dan for the first time in the emergency department after Kevin recklessly ran headfirst into a glass door.

I remember Dan picking me out of several other eligible people asking about why a bottle of explosives was in his flower garden.

I remember Dan building a deck/ pool for his family and friends in which I spent countless hours swimming while staying out of trouble.

I infamously remember, after playing with a chopping gyroscope toy that unknowingly pulverized celery sticks into oblivion.  The profound look of confusion and bewilderment as Dan tried to get information from the steel trap of Kevin's mind why there were a billion micro particles of celery evenly sprayed throughout all of his kitchen and some of the house. 

I remember going on a ski trip and calling Dan  "dad" just because everyone else was doing it. 

I remember Dan and Jane at my house for prom taking pictures with my parents like a regular  part of the family. 

I remember Dan Becher purposely sitting next to me at a Kersting wedding reception to talk about these old times like an old friend would do.

When Jeff reached out last week I knew things would change.. but I was not ready for this sudden end.

I wish I could have seen Dan just one last time to say THANKS!!! for being a Huge part of MY story and a contributing factor to me surviving those  early years. And thanks for providing a fun, safe, happy environment for me and my friends to grow up in. 


When Dan and family moved to Lanesville from Louisville, we started getting our Christmas tree from your neighbor. Every year the weekend after Christmas we without to Lanesville to get our tree. Our dads & Dan, Don, Sandie, & sometimes Diana would tromp across the field across from your house to get our cedar Christmas tree.  This tradition went on for years. Later on I met my husband and low & behold, his grandfather owned the field where we had gotten our Christmas tree for many years.  My husband’s favorite memory with Dan was a trip several years ago out to Yellowstone National Park in the winter time.  Gary & Dan flew out to Jackson Hole, toured the area one day. The next day they boarded snow mobiles & rode into the park seeing geysers, snow  & buffaloes. Truly a dream come true for Gary. 

“Danny” always held a special place in my heart.. Before and after World War II, his Dad, Roman, lived at our house, along with his brother Ambrose. I was a toddler at the time they left for the war, but I always adored Roman and it seemed the feelings were mutual. Leona lived with us for a time during the war.  When Roman and Leona married, I was the flower girl. And, after “Danny” was born,  Roman took me along to the hospital to bring Leona and the new baby home. I was so honored! Dan was always special in my memories, and he grew up to be everything that I believe, they would have wanted. RIP, Dan.

There are so many memories of my life with my big brother.  I think about the memories we have of living in Louisville that Don and Diana don't have. (Although, Don remembers some).  He would be the soldier and I was the war prisoner.  Walking to school--three houses away.  His cub scout meetings in our basement.  Riding the bus with Mom to his clarinet lessons.  Mom and I would have pie at the Woolworth's lunch counter.  Eating dinner together in our tiny little kitchen.  Sharing a bedroom.  He was on the small bed and I got the big bed.  I don't know why.  We would pretend to be on a game show.  He would ask me questions and I had so much time to answer.  What I knew at age 6 I don't know.  He was the smart big brother and I will miss you.
