Dr. Doris A. (Gibson) Tegart, 67, of Louisville and New Albany, passed away Friday, September 14 at Norton Suburban Hospital. She enjoyed a rich career in education, most recently serving as the interim president of Bellarmine University, where she worked for over 20 years, in various roles including Provost, Executive Vice-President, Dean of Education, professor, basketball fan, and fashion inspiration.
Born in Leavenworth, Indiana in 1950 to the late William and Mary Gibson, she grew up working at the Tower Orchards and started her teaching career at Leavenworth Elementary before earning her doctorate in Education from Indiana University in Bloomington. She held a bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University and was a graduate of Leavenworth High School.
She was really fun. She was a master party planner, cookie baker, Christmas decorator, and jewelry accessorizer. She loved Wonder Woman, action movies, circus peanuts, country music, New Orleans, and Italy. Personally and professionally, she was always a champion of women. She was funny and kind.
Doris is survived by her husband, Joseph P. Tegart; daughter, Caitlin Bitzegaio (Eric); son, Trent C. Apple; grandson, Lachlan C. Apple; brother, Bruce Gibson (Susan); as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and outlaws.
Memorial Visitation will be 12 pm ~ 8 pm Tuesday and after 9 am Wednesday at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana. Her Funeral Service will be 11 am Wednesday in the Kraft Spring Street Chapel.
