Edward J. “Papaw” Schmidt, 70 years of age, died Sunday, August 25, 2013 at Floyd Memorial Hospital. He was born August 12, 1943 in New Albany, Indiana to his late parents, Leo Schmidt, Sr. and Elinor C. Schmidt Hammersmith. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from CSX Railroad after some 38 years employment. He was a member St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sellersburg. He was known as the sporting event Papaw and dearly loved his wife, children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Betty J. Schmidt; son, Bryan Schmidt (Karen) of Floyds Knobs, Indiana; daughter, Robin Dornbush (Ryan) of Lanesville, Indiana; brothers, Leo Schmidt, Jr. (Becky), Kenny Schmidt (Nancy), and Ronnie Schmidt (Sharon); sister Loretta Bartley (Larry); grandchildren, Sierra, Sawyer, Sophie and Chloe.
A memorial reception of family and friends will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana. His memorial service will be held 7:00 pm Thursday at the Kraft Charlestown Road Chapel. Expressions of sympathy may go to St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sellersburg.
