Hugh Thomas Owen, M.D. of Jeffersonville, Indiana departed this life on June 8, 2014 at his home in Marietta, Georgia surrounded by the love of his wife and children. Hugh was born on July 6, 1947 in Buffalo, New York, the only child of Virgil and Jane Owen, and as a young boy moved to Louisville, Kentucky. There he graduated from Westport High School where he met the love of his life Barbara Willette. They were married on June 7, 1969 and had three children.
Hugh graduated from Butler University in 1969 where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and spent much of his time traveling to Ball State to visit Barbara. He went on to graduate from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1973. After several years of medical training, Hugh returned to establish his office of dermatology in Jeffersonville, where he practiced medicine for over 35 years.
He was a lifelong “golfaholic” still playing almost weekly well into his 60s. One of the proudest moments of his life, eclipsed only by his wedding and births of his children, was when he caddied for Jack Nicklaus at the inaugural event of Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville. Hugh also had an eye for photography, and enjoyed taking golf course and landscape pictures. He and Barbara spent the last 10 years traveling the National Parks of America, hiking glacial mountain tops and painted deserts side-by-side, in between trips to welcome his grandchildren in the loving and goofy way only Hugh could.
Hugh invested heavily in friendships, including a deep love for his ever faithful yellow lab, Ralph, who was at his feet for 12 great years. He is survived by his wife Barbara Willette Owen of Marietta, Georgia. Three children: daughter, Michelle Owen of Tucker, Georgia; daughter Barbara Owen Benson and her husband Roger of Tucker, Georgia; and son Hugh Thomas Owen, Jr. and his wife Stephanie Owen of Boca Raton, Florida. And four grandchildren: Josephine, Elliott, Finnian and Virgil (Gus).
Anyone wishing to pay respects or send flowers to Hugh and his family can do so at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Rd., New Albany, during visitation hours of 2:00pm – 8:00pm on Friday, June 13. Funeral services are planned for Saturday June 14, also at Kraft Funeral Service, with additional visitation after 11:00am, and services at 2:00pm. Final resting to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery, 701 Baxter Ave., Louisville.
