Joseph P. Tegart, 79, of New Albany passed away Sunday, November 9, 2025 at the Villages at Historic Silvercrest. Joe was born June 7, 1946, the second oldest of the eleven Tegart kids, the start of a life focused on family and fun.
He had a long career in logistics and transportation, most recently as the owner of the Port of Louisville, formerly at American Commercial Barge Lines.
He was a proud graduate of Holy Trinity School, St. Xavier High School, and Indiana University Bloomington, where he was a member of the Rugby Club. As a tried and true Hoosier fan, he was never daunted.
He lived a big life: he was a dishwasher at the legendary Folies Bergere at The Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas, he threw beads in a Mardi Gras parade krewe, he hiked the Grand Canyon rim to rim. He was a world traveler who never changed his watch from what he called “New Albany standard time.”
He was a lifelong Catholic and Democrat.
He was a lot of people’s favorite person.
He is survived by daughter, Caitlin Bitzegaio (Eric); son, Trent C. Apple (Lindsy Serrano); grandson, Lachlan C. Apple; brothers Robert (Elisa), William, and James Tegart; sisters Barbara Warman, Toni Broderick, and Cathy Tegart (Robin) as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and outlaws.
