Mason Thomas Koetter, 27, of Starlight, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Born February 17, 1997, Mason was the beloved son of Brian and Sarah (nee Buschemeyer) Koetter and brother to Emily and Molly. He was the dear nephew of Randy (Sis) Koetter, Rick (Shirley) Koetter, Jerry (Trisha) Koetter, T.J. (Lisa) Koetter, and Gretchen (Brett) Swasey, and had the joy of growing up alongside fifteen first cousins. He was preceded in death by his loving grandparents, Thomas and Mary Frances Koetter, and John and Cathy Buschemeyer.
Mason was a 2015 graduate of Providence High School in Clarksville, Indiana where he played soccer, making many friends along the way because of his easy to love nature. His soccer abilities inspired him to become the kicker for the football team. Mason went on to attend the University of Southern Indiana before embarking on adventures that took him to places near and far.
Mason’s adventurous spirit led him to Idaho, where he learned to snowboard, and to Costa Rica, where he lived as an exchange student, learned Spanish, and played soccer with his local team. He set out on a dream road trip, where he traveled around the country in Grandma Cathy’s Subaru to see the Dallas Cowboys stadium, El Paso to visit his cousins, the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles, the mountains of Colorado and more. Mason recently relocated from Florida, coming home to work in Starlight for Joe Huber’s Restaurant and Koetter Woodworking, the family business. Mason will be remembered for his infectious charm, his love of sports, his deep care for animals, and his daring spirit. He had a unique ability to make others feel valued, always willing to step in and help when there was a need. His family fondly recalls his special relationships with his grandparents, riding side-by-side in Grandpa John’s truck to get Emery’s Ice Cream in Corydon, helping Grandma Koetter entertain the little cousins while she would prepare meals, working alongside Grandpa Koetter in the forest to trim saplings, and having cooking classes with Grandma Cathy. His childhood curly locks were a signature of his endearing charm, and his presence enlivened any room. Mason’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him – through his kindness, work ethic, and love of friends and family.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at the Forest Discovery Center from 2 PM to 6 PM. The Funeral Mass will take place at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Starlight, Indiana, on Monday, February 3, 2025, at 10 AM celebrated by Father John Meyer.
