Maurice I. Stopher

Maurice Irvin Stopher, 96, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away on August 22, 2026 at his home in New Albany. Maurice was born in New Albany to the late William H. and Anna Stopher of New Albany, Indiana on January 11, 1930. He was a graduate of New Albany High School and a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran that served his country proudly.

Maurice married his wife, Dorothy, on June 6, 1964, and they shared the love of a lifetime. They met in 1960 at a pool hall in downtown New Albany where Maurice was employed. Dorothy's brother was a regular at the pool hall and mentioned to Maurice that his sister was moving to New Albany from her hometown of Orleans, Indiana for work. He said that she was a nice girl and they should meet. From that day on they were inseparable and soon married. They did everything together including trips to the bank, grocery stores, and post office.

Maurice worked hard for his family and was the sole provider and allowed Dorothy to raise their 2 daughters which was a blessing. He was employed by Thoroughbred Containers in Louisville, Kentucky (formerly Mead Containers) and retired in 1994. He enjoyed spending time with his grandson making memories that John will always cherish. He loved being a papaw and always made sure that the time they spent together was fun and special to his only grandchild. During his retirement he found that walking along the creek of the old New Albany Country Club was good exercise that turned into a hobby of collecting lost golf balls. He took pride in cleaning and shining the golf balls and enjoyed selling them for a small fee in his front yard. Over the years he enjoyed family trips to Gatlinburg, amusement parks, State Fairs, playing all kinds of card games, board games, and watching beautiful sunsets. His family was his whole world and there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do to make sure that they were happy and taken care of.

Maurice is survived by his loving wife of 62 years who has lovingly provided in-home care for him until his passing. He is also survived by their 2 daughters, Tami McCauley (John) and Tresa Horlander (David), one grandson, John McCauley (Anna), and grand dogs Rudy, Mia, and Mikey. Besides his parents William and Anna, he was preceded in death by his grand dogs Dusty, Suzee, Annie, Pearlee Rose, and Bella.

His family would like to extend a special thanks to the dedicated and amazing staff from Hosparus Health Southern Indiana who provided the best care to Maurice over the last several years, as well as, providing amazing support to Dorothy.

Visitation with family and friends will be at Kraft Funeral Service located at 2776 Charlestown Road in New Albany, Indiana on Thursday, August 27th from 4pm- 8pm and Friday, August 28th from 1pm - 2pm. Funeral service will take place on Friday, August 28th at 2:00 pm with burial following in Kraft Graceland Memorial Park.
