Sharply intelligent, quick to smile, always welcoming and generous, Rebecca “Becky” Caufield Peloff died at the age of 82 at Norton Clark Hospital in Jeffersonville, IN. She was deeply committed to her family, her career, her friends and her Catholic Faith.
She was a solver of puzzles and complex problems, first professionally in the then-new field of computer science starting in 1964; then after retirement as a board member of the New Albany Friends of the Library, a volunteer tax preparer with Tax Aid and an avid player of Scrabble, Backgammon, Solitaire and Sudoku. She was also an enthusiastic participant in the long-standing Caufield family Shanghai Rum nights.
She graduated from our Lady of Providence high school in 1960 and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, IN, in 1964. The first of her family to attend college, she has been a role model to her children and nieces and nephews. She was known among friends and family members for her clever and heartfelt cards and letters, including her fundraising letters for her beloved Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.
She continued to touch peoples lives with her humorous, generous and affectionate personality, even as she struggled in her long fight against Alzheimer’s Disease. Until the end of her life, she was always quick to give a hug and a bright and sometimes sarcastic smile, complete with eye-roll. She is joined in death with her beloved husband of 45 years, Jim Peloff and her parents, James and Mary Ruth Caufield. She is survived by her two daughters, Beth (John Akre) and Amy, her sisters, Ruth Ann Warth and Mary Chovan, and her brothers Mike Caufield and Jim Caufield. In lieu of flowers, her family encourages donations to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.
