Rita Louise Shumate

Rita Louise Shumate, age 67, passed away at home on Sunday, July 30, 2023. She was born on August 16, 1955 to the late August and Mary Sell. She was a medical technologist at Norton Audubon Hospital for nearly 40 years and was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lanesville. Rita had a green thumb and was a tireless gardener who always shared the fruits of her labor with friends and family. She was fiercely dedicated to all she did, and most importantly, to those she loved.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Gary L. Shumate.

Left to cherish her memory are her two children, Jason Shumate (Koree Wood) and Dr. Ashley Shumate (Kristopher Kolish); and siblings, Charles Sell (Judy), Mary Rose Block, Theresa Savage, and John Sell (Robin); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass for Rita will be held Friday, August 4, 2023 at 1:00 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 2500 St. Mary's Drive NE, Lanesville, Indiana 47136 with burial to follow in St. Mary Catholic Church Cemetery.

A celebration of life gathering will be Friday, August 4, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana 47150.
