Born on April 11, 1936, in Corydon, Indiana, Shirley was the daughter of the late Jesse Lynn Shaffer and Sylvia (Jacobs) Shaffer. She was a devoted mother and a proud homemaker who made her family the center of her life.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters: Doris Fackler (Jack), Frances Banet (Frankie), Nancy Hernandez.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Morton Lee Fertig; her children, Debbie Turk, Rebecca VanCleave (Jerry), Steve Fertig (Janine), Karen Dietrich, Jeff Fertig, and Linda Spitznagel (Patrick); her grandchildren, Jessica Turk, Jennifer Turk, Dalton Dietrich, Drew Dietrich, and Taylor Fuller (Jacob); and her great-grandchildren, Ethan Swank, Riely Leonard, and Sawyer Fuller.
A private burial of her ashes will be held at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany, Indiana.
