Ana Gomes

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the daughter of the late Miguel and Preciosa (Pires) Goncalves. She attended school in Portugal until the fourth grade. She later married and migrated to the United States in January 1974 where she resided in New Bedford for most of her life. A devout Catholic, she prayed the rosary daily, and was an avid reader of the Cruzada for over a decade.

She was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church for many years.

Ana was a homemaker, and her biggest joy was helping raise her grandchildren who meant the world to her. In her later years she enjoyed knitting homemade scarves to gift to those she loved. She cherished being surrounded by her cats Oreo and Raven. She valued people most of all, especially her friends and family, to whom she would phone several times a week to chat.

Ana was a generous and kind soul who was always willing to lend a hand or give to anyone in need. She was a true blessing in the lives of all who knew her and will be forever loved and deeply missed.

She is survived by her children, Bertilia Goncalves and her late husband Carlos of Acushnet, Abel Goncalves and his wife Maria Do Ceu of Ludlow; six grandchildren, Maria Goncalves and her fiancé Almerindo Oliveira of Swansea, Paula Cardoso and her husband Joaquim of Acushnet, Michael Goncalves and his fiancé Megan Jones of San Diego, Cathy Goncalves of Acushnet, Carlos Goncalves and his wife Anita of Ludlow and Susan Martin and her husband Alicinio of Ludlow; seven great grandchildren, Caitlin, Andrew, Cameron, Tea, Kacie, Lilia and Ava along with many nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Arminda and Joaquim Goncalves.

Her Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, from 8:00AM to 10:00AM at the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA 02745 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Xavier Church, 125 Main Street, Acushnet, MA 02743.
