Arthur Calheta

Arthur was the beloved husband of the late Gisele L. (Breton) Calheta, with whom he shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. Born in Acushnet, he was the son of the late John and Leopoldina (Jesus) Calheta.

Arthur dedicated many years of service as a Patrolman with the City of New Bedford Water Department. He was also a familiar and beloved figure in the community through his extraordinary commitment to Whaling City Little League, where he managed and coached youth baseball for over 50 years. To generations of children and their families, Arthur was more than a coach—he was a mentor, a supporter, and a friend. He never hesitated to drive children to and from practices and games, always making sure everyone had the opportunity to play.

A simple, kindhearted man with an outgoing personality, Arthur had the rare gift of making friends wherever he went. He enjoyed talking with everyone he met and was active in the local CB Radio Club. He also proudly drove the Command Unit van for the Sheriff's Department.

Arthur lived his entire life in the same home, a place filled with countless memories of family, friends, and community. Family was the center of his world, and he treasured every moment spent with his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also had a special love for his faithful dog, Crocker, who was a constant companion.

Among Arthur's favorite memories was a trip to Disney World, a place that brought him great joy. He often dreamed of returning one day and hoped to buy an RV so he and Gisele could travel together. Though that dream was never realized during his lifetime, it is comforting to imagine that he and his beloved Gisele are reunited once again, taking that long-awaited journey together.

He is survived by his loving daughters, Pamela Perry of Yarmouth and Tammie Pacheco of New Bedford; his cherished grandchildren, Nichole Abreu and her husband, Laurenco, of Florida, Robert Thomas Perry III and his partner, Sarah Lawrence, of New Bedford, and Ross Tyler Perry of Washington, D.C.; and his adored great-grandchildren, Savannah Duarte, Laurenco Abreu, and Hattie Gisele Perry, whose arrival is eagerly awaited.

Arthur's kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family and community touched countless lives. He will be remembered for his warm smile, friendly conversations, generous heart, and the lasting impact he made on generations of young athletes and their families. He’ll be deeply missed.

His funeral will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026 at 9:00am in the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, 343 Tarkiln Hill Rd., New Bedford. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 9, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00pm. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery.
